[ltp] Enabling Serial Port?

Thinkpad 600e running RH 7.3

I have never tried to use the serial port on the back before and tonight I tried to sync my palm pilot using gpilot.  I used setserial to lock the speed at 56k and I verified on the palm that it was set to 56k too.  I'm assuming the serial port is /dev/ttyS0.

I appear to get no communication at all (no hotsync) but there really is no way to tell.

It seems unlikely to me but could the serial port be disabled?  If so would I use tpctl to enable it?
