I have a t40 - and I don't really hear the HDD noise. However the
heat-sink fan makes noticeable noise - whenever it comes up.

However I used to have a HDD in an older laptop - which made a very
noticeable hight pitch noise. I did use it for a while (perhaps more
than a year) - and it didn't fail in my usage.
