The distribution you choose does not depend on your computer's speed
(unless you have a 486), but on your personal taste. Have a look at
http://distrowatch.com (I think this is the url). If you want everything
to work immediately, take SuSE, Mandrake or Redhat or something similar.
If you only want to try it, take Knoppix. If you want a Free OS with
great package management, take Debian. But be warned, you have to do a
lot by hand.

What about the tpctl packages for different distributions? I know
debian's thinkpad-packages, which are very useful. Is tpctl also shipped
with other distributions?

On a 500MHz class computer, you can easily run KDE2 or KDE3 and
OpenOffice.org, if you want to upgrade, give your computer more RAM.
Linux has use for RAM (windows hasn't by the way).

You shouldn't have problems with your HD. The operating system in a
usable desktop configuration (with X, text producing and so on) will
consume perhaps 1GByte or so. You can take a lot of movies and music
with you ...

I'm not a native speaker either, but I don't think everybody on this
list understands german.
