Another good upgrade for his machine would be a bigger/faster hard drive. 
I upgraded the drive in my 400 MHz Thinkpad 240 from the 6G drive that
it came with to a 5400 RPM 40G drive.  This cost about $100 (ebay), and
the system is noticably faster.  Bootup and opening of applications
(particularly Open Office) is about 2X faster than with the old drive.

Upgrading my Thinkpad 240 to 320M RAM helped too.  The 600 can hold 288M,
right?

With newbie-friendly tools and applications, you'd probably have to update
that to 2.5G or so - particularly if you're also installing the
development tools.
