[ltp] Infrared on T40 - serial port problem?

Infrared is not working under kernel 2.6.1-mm3 when it works fine under
2.4.23.  Slow mode is adequate as my Palm won't go any faster anyway!

The problem seems to be that there is NO serial port under my 2.6.1-mm3
kernel!

This was after modprobing irda, ircomm, irtty-sir and sir-dev.

I have not changed the BIOS settings between kernels.

Can anyone pass me the clue stick?

Do I need to reset the serial ports or some such thing?
