I think it s not a hdparm problem....
my 2722 ist working with dma enabled in all 2.6.2 versions... at the
moment I run 2.6.3-rc1-mm1 because of the airo modul
From my config:

[*] Sharing PCI IDE interrupts support
[*] Generic PCI bus-master DMA support
[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available
[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available
Did you get 2.6.3 to build?
hdparm output:
hdparm -i /dev/hda |grep udma
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
