I was (or still am) in the same position as you. I have an R40 2722-3YU, and I decided to use Mandrake 9.2 (mostly because that's the only distro besides Knoppix and SuSe Live I've tried...).
MDK9.2 has a neat and simple installation program, and most things work right after install (don't forget to run the Mandrake update). To make things work a little bit better, some tweaking is needed...
I've spent a lot of time surfing the web to research certain topics - all parts of the learning curve. You can check out my site, http://www.geocities.com/tivarsson/linux.html, to see what I've done with my installation. I also have a small FAQ with step instructions on how to compile the kernel, as well as links to other sites which have helped me out.
NB: R40 has APM.
Good luck,
T.
