Just a data-point for you. I'm still running my tp240 on kernel
2.6.1-gentoo-dev sources, and I have my framebuffer and bootsplash
working on vesafb. My grub line is (one line):

 kernel /boot/bzImage-2.6.1-fb root=/dev/hda3 video=mtrr,vesa:800x600
vga
=0x314 splash=silent

I have the framebuffer compiled in. I know I've seen the screen you are
talking about when I first installed Gentoo on it last fall. As I
recall it was as soon as I got the framebuffer working, but before I
figured out how to tell the framebuffer to run at 800x600.

Hopefully this will be enough to get you going. I would think it should
be the same for 2.6.4

Adam.
