I have T42p with SuSE 9.1 installed on it. I use X.org 6.8.1 and the radeon
driver supplied with it. I have also experimented extensively with fglrx
drivers provided by ATI. This is my observation regarding X.org 6.8.1 and
these drivers to set them up to get the *same* contents on internal and
external display (MergedFB mode).
1. Only External VGA and Thinkpad LCD works with ATI's fglrx drivers.
2. External DVI, External VGA and the Thinkpad LCD works with radeon drivers
(no hardware 3D acceleration though).
If you are trying to configured in MergedFB mode with X.org's radeon driver,
then make sure that the following exists in the Device section of x.org.
Option "MonitorLayout" "TMDS, LVDS"
Option "MergedFB" "on"
Option "CRT2Position" "Clone"
Option "CRT2Hsync" "28-82"
Option "CRT2VRefresh" "40-60"
Option "PanelSize" "1600x1200"
Replace 1600x1200 with whatever is the native resolution of your Thinkpad's
LCD display.
The order of TMDS and LVDS is important above - and that's what made it
possible for me to use the external DVI. I have also attached my xorg.conf in
case you are interested.
