I don't know if this differs between different kernel versions, but try:
$ dmesg | grep -i "host protected"
Using a 2.6.12-kernel, this tells me
hda: Host Protected Area detected
hda: Host Protected Area disabled
which imho means that the entire disk can be used by the os (which in your
case probably means the the recovery partition has been overwritten).
