On a R40 there is a BIOS setting which protects the restore partition or
allows it to be seen by the host O/S. I enabled the partition, created a
filesystem on it, and now it's my /home,

IIRC, 'fdisk -l' will list it out if it is enabled.
Similarly 'cfdisk /dev/hda' will give you an over-view of the partitions.
Take care, you have to be the root use for these commands to work, and it
possible to wreck havoc if you so desire. :-)
