screen is black and never comes back. I pretty much sure the problem is
with the resolution, the TV obviously requires a lower resolution than
my laptop supports (it doesn't help if I set it up to a low resolution
and than reboot).<br>

If user is in plane/train, accellerometers will basically detect problems all the time;
still you want to use the computer.
(And you still want the machine to boot => default == fall detection off).

If it triggered while flying in a plane, I'd be a bit concerned about my
safety. ;-)
As I recall, from what I read about that system, it's supposed to detect
sharp accelerations, such as hitting the floor.

<pre wrap="">Another clever trick is that if user is still using the mouse,
machine is probably not in free fall ;-).

That should be limited to the on-keyboard mouse, not an
external mouse. For example, if my laptop is falling off of the desk,
and I'm using an external mouse (corded or otherwise), the laptop may
be receiving events from the mouse as the weight of the laptop drags
or pushes the mouse across the table on its way to the floor.

<pre wrap="">I ran grub-install /dev/hda1 by accident and can no longer
boot into windows. I tried some remedies online but haven't
solved anything. (The most promising one was using dd to
backup the bootsector and then put in the backup boot sector
into the superblock of /dev/hda1.)
So I guess I need to reinstall windows. I used to be able to
mount my windows partition, but even that is impossible now. I
can't remember doing anything differently -- oh well.

Before reinstalling ... do you have a Windows CD ready? From there you
can boot into a recovery console which -- between others -- provides
two interesting commands which helped me:
fixboot
fixmbr
The former one fixes the boot sector, the latter one the MBR. The first
one should "delete" GRUB from /dev/hda1 while the second one would
remove GRUB from the MBR (interesting if you want to restore the
original Windows MBR, you should only need to fix the boot record of
your partition). See

for more information.
