One year before, when I got my T21, I also thought like you. I tried
to find the best distro that is suit for my laptop but as more distros
I've tried, I realized that Linux make your old computer usage. No
matter what distro you use, but the services or programs that those
distros run will slow down your computer at a specific grade.

In my opinion, FC, Mandriva ... are desktop distro. It means that
those provide you an environment like Windows XP (graphics,
multimedia, automatic, etc...). But if you have experience, you can
remove software, services or retune configuration files and relax with
you hard works. ;).

I've never used Debian before but there're many ones using it claim
that it is the best distro in the world. You can try it.

With my own experience, from suggestion from VietLUG's friends, I turn
from Red Hat (the old distro) to Slackware. This distro's discipline
is KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). I think it is a robust, light
distro. Anyway, using it will help you grab enough Linux skill to use
all others. In my computer, I use Slackware 10.0 (upgraded to current
packages) + pekwm (a lightest windows manager I've ever seen) with no
problem.
