For ACPI suspend-to-disk:
http://www.suspend2.net/
This includes currently patching the kernel, but the webpages
describe well and clearly what to do. Discussions about merging
suspend2 (a.k.a. swsusp2) are now well underway on the kernel list.
If you happen to use Fedora, Mathias Hensler produces good kernel
RPMs, and keeps well up to date:
http://mhensler.de/swsusp/download_en.php
as do some others. I use Mathias's because he retains all Fedora
patches, which makes things less complicated when looking for support.
I'm sure other distros have similar maintainers to make things easy.
Bear in mind suspend2 *is* still in progress - recently there have
been some fs corruption issues - see the suspend2-users list. I've
never lost a bit of data, but spent some time exploring and
recovering filesystems. It's a glitch - before this, I've been using
suspend2 problem-free for more than a year.
