It just means that Mandrake's setup did a better job with your computer 
than RH. Newer releases tend to do things like this better than older 
ones, in general, regardless of distro.

Haha, okay, Mandrake's setup deserves no credit at all then. :) It's 
alsaconf, which is distributed by the ALSA project.

It was originally based on RH but since maybe 7.0 or so has been 
completely separate in development.

In the very rare case that this is so, it can be compiled (with the 
proper development tools, which you're almost certain not to have 
gotten in your default Mandrake install. If not those would have to be 
installed later. But again, very rare. Anything you're likely to hear 
about is probably already available as a Mandrake RPM.)
