As a suggestion, if you're going to post what does and doesn't work,
please be very specific about exactly how you built the kernel, what
.config you were using, etc. And also, the thing that will save
everybody the most amount of time is to change just *one* thing, and
report the result of changing just that one thing. You said that you
weren't very good at doing kernel debugging, but really, it's not that
hard. It just requires following the scientific method, and being
very methodical about conducting your experiments.
One suggestion is to set up your grub or lilo config so that you can
very easily test out a kernel without committing to it; that way, if
it fails you can fall back to a working kernel very easily.
