On my R51, I was using mdk10.1 until a few weeks ago (now using 10.2/2005), and
didn't have much trouble with suspending. For suspend to disk, I was using
pmsuspend2 (from the suspend-scripts package). For suspend to memory, I was
doing 'echo "mem" > /sys/power/state' (see http://www.summet.com/x31/).

If you have an ipw2[12]00 card, you'll need to upgrade to at least a 2.6.11
kernel to get suspend to memory working properly (if you use the Mandrake
Cooker kernel, use the i586-1GB one, or your system won't boot - see bugzilla
if you're interested). The card won't resume after coming out of suspend to
memory with a kernel lower than 2.6.11.

I'd suggest upgrading to Mandriva 2005LE (10.2 - I hate that name!). The
"sleep" function button actually works! The suspend to disk button doesn't, but
typing 'pmsuspend2' in a termainl, even as a normal user, is easy enough. There
are also a lot of improvements with regard to wireless and power management
that come with the 2.6.11 kernel. (Mandriva has added some tools to help as
well.)
