Ok, have tried a few things and not really getting anywhere.
Tried downgrading the bios a couple of versions, and also the
embedded controller software. Still does it. I thought I might
give lilo a go and see what happens, and now it seems to hang a
little longer on the 'thinkpad' screen but I got the lilo screen
immediately after that without a hang. After choosing a kernel
then I get a sort of timer running across the screen (dots)
and the message "Bios data checked successfully" then the kernel
boots. Googling hasn't come up for much about that message
and secondly, why does a bios check message come up after
lilo has already started? I think this is may be the same thing that
happens in grub, just that I dont get to see the message.
If its a mobo issue, I think i will just wait untill the thing dies
completely and get a new laptop. As much as I love this machine,
I am a bit dissapointed at the amount of things that have gone
wrong with it in only two years. Although I must admit, it has
had a lot of work and lived in some hot/dusty places.
