Just in case I am stating the obvious, have you checked the physical
connections of the drive? Is it properly seated? Is there any dust in
there?

Also, can you boot knoppix? (Directly from the BIOS as a bootable CD,
not via an option to grub) If not, then it's nothing to do with either
lilo or grub.
