Of course!

I have a R51 whicht might have some similar hardware. My solution for
running GE under Debian Sarge is as follows:

1.
Start a second X-server with 16bpp resolution (with 24bpp resolution GE
crashes after a few seconds). Make sure that GLX is active.

2.
Set texture resolution of GE also to 16bpp.

Than it should work.
