Well, 1024x768-1024x768 is not too bad, even if the external LCD's native
resolution is 1280x1024. If the scaler in the LCD is good.

I can reproduce that. My xorg.conf (http://mg.pov.lt/xorg.conf) used to
work in MergedFB, plain Xinerama and two independent screens layouts.
Now only MergedFB layouts produce a signal on the external monitor;
If I try Xinerama and two independent screens layout, my monitor says
"no signal". (I'm trying with a 15" CRT -- a Viewsonic P775 -- at home
right now, instead of the Samsung LCD that I used at work before; but I
do not think it would matter.)
Time to look for a bug on https://bugs.freedesktop.org/, and if there
isn't one, report it.

Funny, I never thought I'd find myself agreeing with a statement
containing both "lambda" and "more readable" ;^)
