Yes - this is what you want to do, and, it isn't the default.
There are, I guess, some advantages to having 2 clipboards, one
controlled by select/middle_click; the other by Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V. But it
requires mental gynmastics!
Ctrl-Alt-V is good too.
