OK, slightly less panicked now! Guess I didn't remove all the batteries.
'Cos after scaring myself by reading online that this kind of problem
indicates either burnt out memory sockets or a dead system board I
realized I hadn't tried removing and re-seating the cmos battery. So I
did- and lo-and-behold it started right up. I had to go into the bios
and reset the hard drive as boot #1, but it seems fine (touch wood).

So the lesson children is to sit back and count to ten and make sure
you've thought of everything before you go bothering the nice people on
the linux-thinkpad list for nothing :)

Just to be on the safe side I'm gonna replace the cmos battery- anyone
know of a good US source?
