While I did some work on mergedfb support for savage a while back, I
never quite finished the patch and put it into cvs.  The only way
you'll be able to get mergedfb support is to forward port my old
patch.  mergedfb is dead anyway.  I'm planning to add randr 1.2
support to savage at some point.
