This rang a bell for me. When I first got my T61, somehow the internal
microphone gain was turned up all the way and the internal speaker, too.
That gave a lot of screechy feedback, and pushing the keys made
interesting echo sounds. It's probably a long shot, but check that your
mics are turned down and/or mute your speakers before you return it.
