They are a pain, are they not.

You need a 64-bit or (presumably, since I only tested the first) PAE
platform.  I have a T61p with:

             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       3985488    1918900    2066588          0        508    1351152
-/+ buffers/cache:     567240    3418248
Swap:      6291448          0    6291448

All 4GB available and accounted for.

Lossage on the 32-bit platform.  Try the "server", "big iron" or a 64
bit kernel and you should be happier.
