What a trainwreck.. on the XP machine, when I add the /3GB switch to the
stock boot.ini file to enable PAE, the following artifacts happen: 

1. Video is locked at 640x480 @ 4bit
2. Fingerprint reader is completely unusable
3. ThinkVantage applications crash in a loop, repeatedly

Removing the switch, everything goes back to normal.
