Never mind, KDE can cause it when you tell it to lock the screen on
suspend/hibernation, but what you describe looks more like the halfway
broken R300 radeon KMS in 2.6.32.  Try using a newer kernel, there is
someone who keeps a tree based on longterm 2.6.33 + KMS backports
(search in the LKML archives).
