About that Radeon bit, I managed to snare some chunks of information from 
dmesg.  The last few lines of the spew below are what I saw briefly 
flashed onscreen when the minute of delay is over.

I can't seem to find the article you're talking about for longterm 2.5.33 
+ KMS.  Would simply upgrading the kernel using "apt-get install 
linux-image-2.5.38-bpo.2-686" do the job?
