I checked out the Documentation directory in the kernel source for
kernel parameters.  Apparently two different items are being mixed
up here.  I saw:

acpi_os_name
acpi_osi

I think the second one is the right one.

My W500 had a working mute button, and the volume buttons would at
least unmute, but not affect the volume otherwise.  Now it has
stopped working after doing an emerge @world (running Funtoo
linux).  Adding these didn't help my box at all. :(

xev shows that the buttons are still sending signals.  The keys
didn't die; it's software.
