Thanks for the clarification, I will try acpi_osi. If it helps for

Thanks for that hint. The buttons don't send acpi signals, but with xev
I receive events from XF86AudioLowerVolume and XF86AudioRaiseVolume.
With a little extra work, that should suffice for setting up the
buttons. Will post back if I manage to set them up.
