I suspect you may have the usual problem of multiple different mixers, 
all in series. Check:
  - Application volume control
  - Mixer (kmix/alsamixer-gui/pavucontrol): has application and master 
and maybe more
  - hardware buttons on the keyboard.

If that doesn't help, you may find it useful that VLC allows playback at 
 > 100 % gain
