I think you are right, and it seems it will not work. At least here [1] 
it describes the product you mention, and specifically it states it 
requires "ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th)". On the other hand, here [2] it 
describes another product which requires your specific model (the 
adapters seem different).

At least on [1] states 1000mbps in the Question&Answer, and I agree with 
you that any other option would be disappointing.

Somewhere in [1] in the Question&Answers section explain a little bit 
about the difference... stating that it has its own controller instead 
of sharing the usb one.

At least, I have tried a usb adapter myself, and they work quite decently.
