Could be worse.

They could still be making us buy those worthless mwave DSP modems. Geez,
even with two Computer Science degrees, I couldn't get them to work
reliably. Winmodems are another brain-dead cost-cutting idea.

I always carry a PCMCIA modem with me anyway. It will invariably get a
higher-speed connection than either the mwave or the winmodem on the same
connection. The PC cards with flashable ROMs can even be upgraded to
accomodate protocol improvements.
