Tod,

I have liked Mandrake when I have installed it in the past, but this
time around I am looking for a more bare bones approach to a
distribution. By bare bones, I mean less hand-holding and customization
of the actual packages to fit the distribution. I really want to learn
the core of the Linux system like I know the *BSDs and Solaris.

For my personal machine, Gentoo, SlackWare, and Debian are all high on
my list to try. Note that I am not trying to start a distribution war,
as I really only have experience with Red Hat. These just seem like a
nice place to start, so I'm going to invest some time in all of them.

I've also seriously considered the Linux from Scratch project, which
looks interesting. However, I'm not sure I have the kind of time needed
to do it.

For business use (I'm a telecommunications consultant), I'll still
recommend Red Hat. While it is not currently meeting my needs, the
support and company behind it often make it an easier sell than the more
non-commercial distributions. And most of my customers need just the
basics, which Red Hat provides very well.

To keep this (somewhat) on-topic ... has anyone heard where IBM is going
with their officially supported distributions? At times, I have heard
both Red Hat and SuSe.
