Sorry in advance for abusing your mailing list...I'm
not a linux user, but my past experience is that linux
users are more competent than run-of-the-mill IT's. 
I've been trying to solve this problem for awhile, so
here goes...

I have a 310ED (laptop) and I very much dislike the
built-in mouse (trackpoint) so I bought a PS/2 mouse. 
I have since returned the mouse because the laptop
doesn't get along with it very well.  When I plug in a
mouse and boot up the computer, the computer acts as
though I am wildly clicking the mouse buttons and I
have no control over the mouse.  If I then:

1) <cringe> unplug and replug the mouse, everything
works great (both the trackpoint and PS/2 respond
perfectly)

or 2) click the trackpoint, I can then use the
trackpoint so long as I don't move or click with the
PS/2 (at which point it would go berserk again).

Obviously, neither of the above options are solutions,
so I went into the BIOS to try to fix things.  Once in
the BIOS, there is no option having anything to do w/
a mouse or pointing device!  I have changed all
remotely possibly related options systematically to no
avail.  I then found out about the Notebook Manager
(BIOS thing that you open from within Windows).  There
*is* an option for a pointing device and it says "both
enabled" or "internal only", depending on whether the
mouse is plugged in...indicating that everything
should be fine??

Anyway, if anyone has any insight I'd be very
grateful...
