It sounds more like your distribution's sorely out of date rather than the
information on the web.  Your sound card can be set up using the cs4232
driver.  

Try these options for the cs4232 driver: io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0
mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5 

You'll need the mwave drivers (from IBM) to get the internal modem to
work, if you want to use it.  http://www-124.ibm.com/acpmodem/

The easier way to make that stuff work would be to install, say, Redhat or
Mardrake - along with apt for RPM if you install Red Hat.  My PCMCIA
ethernet and most other stuff worked out-of-box with Red Hat 8.0 on my
600.  And my 770Z - gotta love that DVD playback. :)

Would Debian unstable work better?  My experience with Debian largely
involves fighting with dselect for a while and then getting Red Hat.
