Did that, no joy. Tried cold boots, X restart, level 5->3->5, level3 + 
startx, no go.

In fact, I suspect that it is the *detection* process that's goofing up 
here. Either X is not reading the display response correctly, or the 
projectors aren't giving out correct information. I have noticed that 
*some* projectors work just fine (e.g. recently I used a BenQ projector 
that worked like a charm), but others cause this problem to appear (last I 
tried was one of those ASK projectors).

Is there any way to display what X thinks it has detected? and any way to 
override this?
