Yes.
Owner has some exams and can use XP for a while so nothing will happen for a 
day or two.
I've asked for the files and commands suggested.

It is SuSE 8.2 with the Broadcom Ethernet driver from that company and one of 
the regrettably WIndows-like things I have contemplated is taking it to SuSE 
9 - but I'd like to work out just what ailed it.
