Hmmm, 
The method you used was exactly the same, it might be worth mentioning,
although it doesn't seem to be the case with you, that i had a huge
problem trying to get kppp to find the modem, it wouldn't work until i
had a made a symbolic link. Additionally i need to set the user in the
uucp group.

One thing i just noticed, you might need to change the hw:0 to hw:1, in
my case hw:0 is the soundcard, and hw:1 is the modem. 
Not sure how to check but when i do a alsamixer -c 1 i get an error
about mixer levels, any higher number i get a card not pressent.
