So if I'm reading you correctly - I can't actually get XP directly from
a service partition. And since XP won't honour other partitions, it's
goodbye Linux then. (From the partition's raw contents below, I see
there is no such i386 folder):

autoexec.bat* ibmdos.com* peldr* tpplga6.exe* tpplgw7.exe*
autoexec.icr* ibmrnr.txt* plnrchk.bat* tpplgd3.exe* tpplgw8.exe*
boot.ini* ibmwork/ preboot/ tpplgd4y.exe* tptools/
bootsect.dos* ie55x.exe* psphd.tag* tpplgd5.exe* version.id*
command.com* launchit.bat* recovery/ tpplgd6.exe* win51*
config.icr* mfg/ Recycled/ tpplgd9.exe* win51ip*
config.sys* minint/ rexx.exe* tpplgm2.exe* win51ip.sp1*
dos/ ntdetect.com* rxdinfo.rx* tpplgt1.exe* winbom.ini*
finddrv.bat* ntldr* scrrec.ver* tpplgw3.exe*
himem.sys* pcycle.exe* tpdiag2.exe* tpplgw4.exe*
ibmbio.com* pdldr* tpdiag.exe* tpplgw5.exe*
