there are several advantages to using vnc.

1) There is no need to be concerned about xinerama problems of menus
popping up on the wrong displays
2) I can't figure out how to get my kb and mouse to switch focus to a
different x session without using xinerama
3) It's possible to have a small window of the presentation on my main
screen so i can have notes on my main desktop
4) It's possible to see applications from the external display even
after it is disconnected.

I should probably have referenced the original config that I based this
on in my earlier message. here it is:

That's the problem... i don't know what to set DISPLAY to... it's not
localhost:3 . there is something funny about the DISPLAY to address a
vncserver xsession

thanks for your response!
