Thanks for your response. I'm scrambling up the learning curve on this
issue, and the info above should be very helpful.

Since my original query I discovered linuxant.com and downloaded what I
hope will be the right driver (and paid for the "full" version). If and
when I get the modem to work, I'll post my results for whatever it may be
worth to someone else.

My earlier problem with getting the serial port to work using the
replicator is still unresolved. But all things considered, I'm very happy
with the T42p, and my decision to use it as a desktop replacement was a
good one. 

Too many problems and too little time. Ain't grooming a new machine
great? :(
