[ltp] A30 DVD CD-RW

I recently purchased a A30 2652-34u and installed fc3 on it ( nice) .
This is the first TP  that I have run into where the owners manual is not
on the IBM web site, at least I can't find it.

I now want to move up to a DVD CD-RW drive.
There is a bewildering ocean of IBM part numbers for these drives
and it appears that many of these will only fit by using an adapter (?).
Is there anyone on the list who has been down this path and has warnings
or suggestions?
Any tips or "war stories" will be appreciated.
