I'm using Gentoo on a T43, too.  I've had issues with the 2.4
firmware causing ksoftirqd to start eating up 100% of the cpu after
a few hours of heavy use.  So I finally rm'd the 2.4 firmware files
and symlinked the 2.3 files into their place.  Works beautifully.
