maybe udev related ?
i recently had the problem with a garmin forerunner after upgraded to
newer kernel where the device could not be accessed anymore.
udev upgrade helped ... two things seemed to cause the problem 
SYSFS{] vs. ATTRS{} and wrong permissions for the generated device.

... just a thought
