Do they fail to change the headphone-out and builtin speaker's volume,
perchance?

The X40 volume buttons are not simple hot keys. They are a digital volume
control for the headphone-out and builtin speakers. They cannot be
configured to just report they have been pressed, so they should not be
abused as generic volume keys or somesuch.

This has changed only on the Lenovo *61 line (and maybe the new thinkpads
with fucked up model numbering, such as the X300, upcoming *200, etc). For
all other thinkpads, the volume "keys" are not to be messed with.

If the buttons are working (and they should, a X40 does it all in firmware,
including brightness changes, unless X.org managed to block that), then it
is all working as it is supposed to.

I am curious, what do you need the ACPI events for?
