T60 with Ubuntu 10.04 here, and I do have sound (wireless issues, but that's 
another story).

I assume you've tried to set "System" --> "Preferences" --> "Sound" ?

Also gnome setting are stored in your home directory. Have you tried to create 
a new test user?
