It sounds like you are using one of the software suspend
implementations for Linux. The ibm-acpi module is not involved in
this.
Which one? There are three: swsusp, pmdisk and swsusp2. The first two
are integrated with the standard kernel, the third is a separate
patch. You should check which one is compiled into your kernel.

(see http://www.tux.org/lkml/) or the swsusp2 list (see
http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/) if you are using that.
As for ibm-acpi, please see the README for the supported features and
how to use them. Which ThinkPad are you running it on?
