Well, since I compiled the kernel from stock source, I guess I'm the
authority.  When I hit Fn-F4, it was complaining about /proc/acpi/sleep
being not found.  Sure enough, it was not there.  I selected the suspend
(to disk?  USB's fatally messed up right now, can't check) option, with
the rest of the ACPI options (under "power (APM, ACPI)").  The help said
it was poorly supported.

Since Fn-F4 isn't supposed to do a suspend-to-disk at all, it appears I 
have messed up a config file somewhere.  I'll check out my configuration 
when the computer's back up.

I'll check the archives before I subscribe.  I've heard that is a very 
busy mailing list; also, I don't want to make a fool of myself among 
people who know kernel internals.  :-)
